The observance of the Sabbath day is unique among all the commandments given by Jehovah. There are many Christians today who declare their allegiance to God and violate this commandment without realizing that they are constantly transgressing His laws. The Ten Commandments can be summarized as spiritual laws that teach us how to love each other and how to love Jehovah. Jesus, when questioned about the commandments, summarized them in this manner, ". Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets (Matthew 22:37-40, KJV )."

The first four of the Ten Commandments teaches us love for Jehovah. Jesus, in the book of John 14:15, tells us that to love Him requires obedience to His commandments, "If ye love me, keep my commandments." This is what is required of us to show our love for Jehovah. To love God we must keep or observe His commandments. The first four of the Ten Commandments outline how we should accomplish this. Firstly, God has to be the only God in our lives; we should not worship any other God but Him. Secondly, we are instructed not to create images of anything in heaven, in the sea, or on the earth for religious purposes. We should not bow down to any such image as a part of worship or pray to them as a part of worship. We are required to pray to God and Him only. Thirdly we should not invoke Jehovah's name in the committing of evil acts or misuse His name in any way, and fourthly we should honor Him by observing the Sabbath day, a day He blessed and made Holy.

These four commandments tell us what to do to express our love for God. Failure to observe the fourth commandment keeps us out of fellowship with Jehovah. It is significant that there are many Christians who do not observe the fourth commandment, and still believe that they are in fellowship with God.

There are many today who declare that Sunday, the first day of the week, is their Sabbath. This, however, leaves them in a state of rebellion against Jehovah. God created the seventh day as the Sabbath day and blessed that day and made it holy. Only God can make a day holy. We cannot declare a day to be holy and then observe it as our Sabbath in place of Jehovah's Sabbath. Yet this is precisely what has occurred, and many Christians are in absolute rebellion against God while believing that they are in allegiance with Him.
